Oregano Oil: The Definitive Guide

Human trials mainly study purified carvacrol, not variable whole oregano oil. Laboratory antimicrobial activity cannot supply a clinical dose or justify treating infection.

The evidence separates purified carvacrol trials from whole-oil and laboratory claims.

What is oregano oil?

Oregano oil is a volatile preparation from oregano species, often Origanum vulgare. Its carvacrol, thymol and other constituents vary with species, plant chemotype, geography and distillation. “Oil of oregano” diluted in a carrier, concentrated essential oil, culinary herb and purified carvacrol are different exposures.

Human trial evidence is narrow. It does not establish oregano oil as an antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal, antiparasitic, asthma treatment or “microbiome reset.”

Typical Oregano Oil Protocols

Research exposures, not personal recommendations. These are purified-carvacrol regimens, not whole-oil doses. [1]–[3]
Source and contextMaterialAmountFrequencyDurationObserved result
Ghorani 2021 · 33 people with moderate asthmaPrepared purified-carvacrol capsules alongside routine medicines1.2 mg/kg/day totalThree times per day2 monthsSymptoms, pulmonary-function tests and several oxidative or cytokine measures changed in the active group
17 received carvacrol and 16 placebo. Small adjunct trial; it did not test replacement of asthma care or retail oregano oil.
Alavinezhad 2017 · 23 people with asthmaPurified-carvacrol capsule1.2 mg/kg/day totalFrequency not reported in PubMed abstract2 monthsPulmonary tests, symptoms and inflammatory measures changed in the active group
12 received carvacrol and 11 placebo. The abstract supports the daily total but not an invented administration schedule.
Ghorani 2021 Phase I · healthy volunteersPurified carvacrol1 or 2 mg/kg/day totalFrequency not reported in PubMed abstract1 monthMeasured values remained within normal ranges, although several laboratory markers changed
The abstract does not report the sample size or administration frequency. This does not establish long-term safety or a whole-oil dose.

There is no RDA, AI or tolerable upper intake level for oregano oil or carvacrol. Do not calculate a whole-oil dose from a purified-carvacrol regimen unless the actual carvacrol content and formulation are known; even then, equivalence is unproven.

Titration
No validated titration schedule prevents irritation or toxicity.
Timing
Only the 33-person trial explicitly reports three daily administrations; the other featured abstracts do not.
Duration
The featured controlled exposures lasted one or two months, not continuous long-term use.
Stopping
Stop for severe burning, repeated vomiting, wheeze, swelling, widespread hives, unusual bleeding or worsening respiratory symptoms.
Purified carvacrol, whole oregano oil and laboratory assays answer different questions. Sources: Ghorani 2021 asthma trial · LiverTox oregano monograph.

What is oregano oil commonly used for?

It is marketed for colds, digestive symptoms, candidiasis, parasites, “SIBO,” inflammation and immune support. Laboratory studies show membrane effects against microbes under controlled conditions. Human absorption, achievable tissue concentration, organism identity and clinical outcomes are separate questions.

Which form and label details matter?

Record botanical species, essential oil versus carrier-diluted product, carvacrol percentage and milligrams, thymol, serving volume, route and co-ingredients. Never assume a drop is a standard unit across bottles. Culinary oregano and tea deliver different profiles from distilled oil.

What does the human evidence show?

Ghorani 2021 randomized 33 people with moderate asthma to purified carvacrol capsules totaling 1.2 mg/kg/day in three administrations or placebo for two months, alongside routine medicines. Respiratory symptoms, pulmonary-function tests and several oxidative-stress and cytokine measures changed in the active group. The study was small, measured many outcomes and tested carvacrol as an adjunct, not whole oregano oil or medication replacement. [1]

Alavinezhad 2017 randomized 23 people to purified carvacrol totaling 1.2 mg/kg/day or placebo for two months. Pulmonary-function, symptom, inflammatory-cell and hs-CRP measures changed in the active group. The PubMed abstract does not report the administration frequency, so the later trial’s three-times-daily schedule should not be assigned to it. [2]

The Phase I report compared 1 and 2 mg/kg/day purified carvacrol for one month in healthy volunteers. Several laboratory measures changed, but post-treatment values remained within normal ranges. Without a placebo group described in the abstract, an unreported sample size and only one month of exposure, it cannot establish chronic safety or safety of variable essential-oil products. [3]

How might oregano oil work?

Carvacrol and thymol can disrupt microbial membranes in laboratory systems. Those concentrations and direct contacts do not reproduce oral dosing in a human body. Anti-inflammatory and smooth-muscle effects are also studied experimentally, but the clinical asthma trials remain preliminary and formulation-specific.

What are the risks and interactions?

Concentrated oil can irritate the mouth, esophagus and gastrointestinal tract, causing burning, nausea, vomiting or abdominal discomfort. Allergy is possible, especially with reactions to plants in the mint family. Aspiration and dosing errors add risk with concentrated liquids.

LiverTox reports no published cases of clinically apparent liver injury attributed to oregano oil, while emphasizing that high-dose supplement use is not an approved disease treatment and human safety data are limited. Absence of published liver cases does not prove broad safety. [4]

Review use with anticoagulants or antiplatelets, glucose-lowering medicines and before surgery. Avoid medicinal-dose use in pregnancy because safety is inadequate. Do not give concentrated essential oil to children without qualified pediatric guidance.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, throat swelling, fainting, repeated vomiting, severe chest or abdominal pain, or a suspected aspiration.

Legal status in the United States and Canada

In the United States, oregano may be used as a food flavor and oregano-oil products may be sold as supplements; this does not approve them to treat infection or asthma.

In Canada, a licensed natural health product carries an NPN tied to its exact ingredients, route and labeled conditions. It does not make purified-carvacrol trial results transferable to every oil.

What should be monitored?

Record species, formulation, carrier, carvacrol percentage and amount, route, drops or capsules per administration, frequency, start and stop dates, burning, reflux, vomiting, stool changes, rash, breathing and medicine changes.

What happens after stopping?

No withdrawal syndrome or taper is established. Persistent respiratory, gastrointestinal or infection symptoms need assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.

How should it be stored?

Follow the label, keep concentrated liquids closed and away from heat and light, retain the dropper and lot, and store out of sight and reach of children.

Community experience

Reports often interpret burning, diarrhea or fatigue as microbial “die-off.” These symptoms can be direct adverse effects and do not prove pathogen killing. Anecdotes rarely identify carvacrol dose, organism or objective outcome.

How does oregano oil compare with other approaches?

It does not replace diagnostic testing, indicated antibiotics or antifungals, vaccination, asthma controller therapy or urgent assessment. Purified-carvacrol trials are exploratory adjunct studies.

Common questions

Is the asthma evidence about whole oregano oil?

No. The named trials used purified carvacrol capsules alongside routine medicines. [1], [2]

What does 1.2 mg/kg/day mean?

It is a weight-based daily total of purified carvacrol. Only the 33-person trial explicitly divided it into three daily administrations. [1]

Does it treat bacterial or fungal infections?

Human oral trials have not established a regimen for those claims. Laboratory antimicrobial activity is insufficient.

Does burning mean “die-off”?

No. Burning can reflect direct irritation and should not be interpreted as efficacy.

Is oregano oil linked to liver injury?

LiverTox reports no published clinically apparent cases attributed to it, but human high-dose safety evidence remains limited. [4]

Can essential oil be swallowed directly?

Concentrated essential oil can injure mucosa and cause dosing errors. Product route and dilution must be explicit.

Is long-term use established?

No. Featured human exposures lasted one or two months.
